WELCOME TO CHEVY CHASE

In 1725, Colonel Joseph Belt received a patent for 560 acres of land in colonial Maryland, just northwest of the future Washington DC and named it “Cheivy Chace”. During the 1900’s, under the development of the Chevy Chase Land Company, the area became a planned community and the nucleus of one of America’s first streetcar suburbs.

Built around this streetcar hub, the original founders envisioned a distinctive community of handsome homes in a park-like setting, featuring broad streets, sidewalks and parks. This early planned development was even home to a man made lake.

Today, the site of Chevy Chase Lake is now just a small batch of woods, and streetcars are a thing of the past. But, despite technological advances and the urban sprawl of Metro DC, the community and its character remain essentially what its original founders envisioned. It is still a beautiful, tranquil suburb retreat conveniently accessible to it’s bustling big city neighbor, Washington DC.

Retaining it’s original style, character and name, the community of Chevy Chase is now all of the following: a zip code that encompasses a town, a CDP (an unincorporated Census Designated Place), several villages and sections within Montgomery County Maryland. And because this community straddles the DC line, it is also the name of the very northwest corner of Washington DC (Chevy Chase DC).

Looking for a calmer retreat from Metro DC without sacrificing most of the urban amenities? Chevy Chase offers some of the best shopping and dining options in the greater metro DC area. Located just inside the DC line, on Wisconsin and Connecticut Avenues, you will find the “Rodeo Drive of the East” with high-end shops with names like Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany and Cartier.

The American City Diner, pictured on the left, is one of several commercial businesses located along Connecticut Avenue NW in Chevy Chase. This famous diner attracts customers from both DC and Montgomery County.

Chevy Chase, MD is part of the Montgomery County school district. And the students in the Chevy Chase district routinely rank among the best in the nation on their placement examinations. The first class school district in the community has made Chevy Chase a desirable choice for those raising families.

Even though the area is comprised of a small town, CDP, and smaller villages, many of the residents use the subway to get to work every day. There are 3 metro stations along the red line that service the largely residential Chevy Chase region making commuting to the DC job market a fairly easy daily experience.

Real estate found in the Chevy Chase zip code, just north of Chevy Chase Circle, includes some of the most prestigious properties to be found in the Washington DC suburbs. Here the prices on luxurious estates and condos found along the cherry blossom streets can occasionally reach upwards of $5M although more typically they are in the $2-$3M bracket.

The northern region of the zip code offers some smaller more modest 1950 style Colonial or rambler, Federal style townhouses, split-level and single-family homes for which one can expect to pay in the range of $550-600k and up.

Area attractions include Columbia County Club, an old fashioned, yet still challenging golf course. The area is also home to the Audubon Naturalist Socitety/Woodend. Here one can tour the Georgian mansion and explore the 40 acres of wooded sanctuary area and enjoy the many local activities and events sponsored here.
